Kushner contemplating shakeup of legal team

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner’s representatives have reportedly begun reaching out to criminal defense lawyers to potentially represent him in the ongoing federal probe into alleged ties between President Trump’s campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential race.

Allies of Trump’s son-in-law have expressed reservations about the link between Kushner’s current attorney, Jamie Gorelick, and special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the investigation into Russian election meddling, according to The New York Times.

Prior to being tapped to lead the investigation, Mueller and Gorelick were partners at the Washington, D.C., law firm WilmerHale.

Gorelick, who is preparing Kushner to meet with Senate Intelligence Committee investigators, in a statement to the Times on Sunday described Kushner’s recent talks with other legal counsel.

“After the appointment of our former partner Robert Mueller as special counsel, we advised Mr. Kushner to obtain the independent advice of a lawyer with appropriate experience as to whether he should continue with us as his counsel,” Gorelick said.

Kushner’s representatives reportedly started reaching out to attorneys in May after a series of reports that Kushner had expressed a desire to Russia’s ambassador to set up a secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin.
